The Ladder

The Ladder
on 22 October 1926 at the Mansfield Theatre, the amateurishly written play by J. Frank Davis ran an amazing 794 performances. Edgar B. Davis (no relation to the author), a Texas oil millionaire who wanted to promote the idea of reincarnation, underwrote the lavish production directed and produced by Brock Pemberton, with scene design by Raymond Sovey,* and costumes by Robert Edmond Jones. Antoinette Perry played the young woman who has visions of previous lives in 1300, 1670, and 1844, finally returning to 1926 to the beau (Vernon Steele) she had not married in the past. Davis was willing to keep the play running at a deficit, and would even admit theatergoers free.
